Shaggy Live in Colombo


Popular reggae singer Shaggy arrived in the country yesterday ahead of  tomorrow's performance.

Shaggy will take the stage with Ravon at the CR & FC Grounds , this will be the singer's second visit to the island to perform. In addition, local acts such as Bathiya & Santhush, Natasha Rathnayake and Azlan & The Sherifs will be performing as well.

Born October 22, 1968 in Kingston, Orville Richard Burrell, better known by his stage name Shaggy, is a Jamaican-American reggae singer and rapper.

He is perhaps best known for his 1995 single “Boombastic” and the 2000 single “It Wasn’t Me”.

The Jamaican singer first visited Sri Lanka to perform at the launch of E FM of EAP Media Network.

Hirunika complaints of death threat



Hirunika Premachandra, the daughter of slain former MP Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra lodged  a complaint at the Police headquarters late last night alleging that she had received credible information that a contract has been given to kill her.

“I have received credible information that a contract has been given to kill me. This was first revealed by the media and upon further investigation, I found out that the information was in fact credible and reliable,” she said.

Hirunika said she made the complaint because there was an imminent threat to her life and because she wanted further security. “There is an imminent threat to my life. I came to the Police to make them aware of the current situation which is very unclear to all of us,” she said.

Colombo Chief Magistrate Prasanna Alwis today ordered Inspector General of Police (IGP) N.K. Illangakoon to investigate into the alleged death threat received by Hirunika Premachandra.

When the case on the murder of Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra was taken up at court, the aggrieved party lawyers complained to the chief magistrate about the death threat.

The Chief Magistrate also ordered to the IGP to report back with the results of the investigation at the next hearing date on May 08.

Singer Sathish Perera dies of leukaemia



Popular singer Sathish Perera passed away in the early hours of this morning (Apr. 23) at a private hospital in Colombo.
He was 43.

Mr. Perera had been suffering from leukaemia for some time and admitted to hospital two days ago.
The son of the late singer Shelton Perera, he was the brother of singer Anuradha Perera.

Anjela Seneviratne loses embassy job over hashish parcel



The Saudi Arabian embassy in Colombo has sacked its employee and senior actress Anjela Seneviratne, to whom a parcel of hashish had been addressed.

However, it has now bee established that two British youths had themselves sent the parcel of drug from New Delhi, India to her name, in order for them to collect it here.

Mrs. Seneviratne said she was sorry that she had lost her job yesterday (Apr. 23) following the false accusations levelled against her over the incident.

One of the British youths has been arrested while the other has fled.
The duo had gone to New Delhi, concealed 366 grams of heroin inside a magazine and sent it to No: 67, Hudson Road, Kollupitiya, where Mrs. Seneviratne was a tenant around 10 years ago.

After the Central Mail Exchange received the parcel, they had produced a letter, purportedly by the senior actress, giving them authority to collect the parcel.

The police narcotics bureau has recorded a statement from Mrs. Seneviratne.

Menaka Rajapaksa divorced

Colombo courts heard the divorce case of Menaka Rajapaksa to separate from his wife Virangani Yesterday.

The verdict was given by the Magistrate for Menaka’s case for a divorce. The Magistrate allowed the divorce only on conditions laid by the authorities of the Courts.
All expenses of his daughter has to be paid by Menaka. Menaka also should allow his former wife Virangani to take full responsibility of looking after the daughter and total care of the daughter would be in the hands of Virangani without Menak’s interference.

There was a rumour about a relationship between Menaka and Nehara peiris but both say it is a  very close friendship and nothing beyond that. However both were seen together at various public places and at various functions where Tele drama actors participated.

Last year Nehara had filed a divorce from a former legal husband Nirmal at the magistrate courts and the verdict was given in favour of Nehara and, she was awarded a divorce from Nirmal.

Since then the two Menaka and Nihara were seen openly at public places and most recent past were seen in pictures in the city of Boston at America for acting in a Tele drama.

Piyumi Purasinghe's Engagement photos

Actress Piyumi Purasinghe who claimed the hearts of teledrama fans through her performances in Nilanjana and Bonda Meedum engaged on March 24 at the Galadari Hotel.

She engaged to a guy named Remy Rajlal, who is a close associate of a minister who crossed over to the government from the UNP.

The duo had met through a friend of Piyumi’s.
Though their love story is not new, it was kept under wraps even from Piyumi’s closest friends, reports say.

Also Anarkali’s sudden exit from Thishuladeepa Thambawita’s ‘Adariye’ teledrama, her role has been given to Piyumi.
In addition to her work in Adariye, Piyumi is also going for shooting of ‘Adare Ahasa Tharam.’

Dr. Jayalath Jayawardena found unconscious at Gatwick Airport

 
 
United National Party (UNP) Gampaha District parliamentarian Dr. Jayalath Jayawardena has been admitted to East Surrey Hospital after being found unconscious at Gatwick Airport in London on 13 April.


“He was admitted to the hospital and the doctors are still monitoring his condition. He seems to be stable for now with the medication,” Dinesh Kapukotuwa, President of UNP-UK branch said.

Dr. Jayawardena left London for a tour of Europe and was found collapsed at the airport, Kapukotuwa further told Janaka Alahapperuma reporting from London.


When I contacted the hospital on Saturday (14 April) afternoon, a staff member who requested anonymity confirmed that the Sri Lankan MP was admitted to one of their male wards and was receiving treatment. “His condition continues to be closely monitored by the specialist doctors at the hospital,” the member added.
