End for Bonda Meedum as Udari Warnakulasuriya has become Pregnant

Popular teledrama Bonda Meedum is to be halted abruptly after its lead actress Udari Warnakulasuriya has reportedly become pregnant. The teledrama, which is based on Sujeewa Prasannaarachchi's novel Bonda Meedum, is telecast by the ITN.

Udari and popular actor Saranga Dissasekara plays the teledrama's lead roles - Sansala and Dhanuka.

Though the drama was originally supposed to end with Dhanuka pledging to take care of Sansala – who is unable to walk, Udari's condition has forced the producers to end the story with Udari going mad, reports say.

The teledrama, which is directed by Chandika Wijesena, also features a cast including Buddhadasa Withanachchi, Janak Premalal, Ananda Wickremage, Meena Kumari, Gihan Fernando, Gayan Wickramatillakem Chandika Nanayakkara, Gayana Sudharshani and Madhani Malwatta.

No extension on State of Emergency

Sri Lanka on Thursday announced the lifting of the state of emergency imposed nearly 30 years ago to confront the threat from the Tamil Tigers. 

The announcement was made by President Mahinda Rajapaksa in Parliament saying, “I am satisfied that the state of emergency is no longer required. So, we will not extend it.” 
In a special speech in Parliament, the president said he had continued with the emergency rule only for curbing terrorism.

He went onto say that emergency laws helped eliminate terrorism during June 2006 to May 2009.

Thereafter, the laws were used to restore civilian life and for rehabilitation and resettlement activities.

The president said that except for 8,000 people, all the 300,000 displaced have now returned to their home villages, adding that such an achievement was a victory by his government.

Death penalty for 4 suspects in Angulana double murder

The four suspects in the double murder in Angulana were sentenced to death by the Colombo High Court trial-at-bar today (Aug. 25).

The convicted are former OIC of Angulana Police Thumbegedara Newton, constable Indrawansa Kumarasiri, constable Dhammika Nihal Jayaratne and homeguard Janapriya Senaratne.

Judges Deepali Wijesundara, W.T.M.P.B. Warawewa and Kumuduni Wickramasinghe passed the death sentence on the suspects.


The suspects had been in remand prison for nearly two years.

The attorney general filed charges against them over the shooting dead of two youths Dinesh Tharanga and Dhanushka Udayakantha Aponso, who had been in their custody, on 12 August 2009.

Nehara to sue Eethalaya

 

Popular actress, announcer, and dance artiste Nehara Peiris is to sue a magazine for using a provocative photograph of her in their front cover according srilankamirror site. Sources say that this magazine is named as 'Eethalaya'.

A headline saying 'facts on teledrama actresses who had involved in prostitution have been revealed' has been printed on top of her photograph.

Nehara had reportedly told a close friend of hers that the headline printed on top of her photograph could further tarnish her image.

However, another photograph of the same photo shoot was also used in a supplement of a local English paper.

Lasith Malinga became the first man to take three ODI hat -Tricks

Lasith Malinga became the first man to take three one-day international hat-tricks as Sri Lanka secured a consolation victory in the final ODI in Colombo.

Malinga captured the wickets of tailenders Mitchell Johnson, John Hastings and Xavier Doherty in successive deliveries in the 46th over to help dismiss Australia for a modest 211 runs. He had best bowling figures of 3-35.
It could be argued that Malinga has taken four ODI hat-tricks, after his double hat-trick - four wickets in four balls - against South Africa at the 2007 World Cup. He picked up three in three deliveries against Kenya at this year's World Cup, and it would have been a brave person to tip against him adding to his tally when Doherty walked out to face the hat-trick ball this time.

Gresha Schulling (born 1983, Colombo) is a Sri Lankan musician. She has been hailed as a rising star from the world of popular music in South Asia.She comes from a distinguished musical family from Sri Lanka. Gresha was educated in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia at the Continental School, and in Sri Lanka. She took to music while she was in Saudi Arabia and even won a 'battle of the bands' contest in her school.When she returned to Sri Lanka she decided to follow her in popular music after she completed her GCE Advanced Levels.

She has also recorded the Nimal Mendis classic from the iconic Sri Lankan film, 'Ganga Addara.' The original song was recorded by the Sri Lankan film star, the late Vijaya Kumaratunga. 'Ganga Addara' will be released on her debut album.

Gresha Schuilling was appointed Sri Lanka's Ambassador for Autism by the Autism Awareness Campaign UK and Sri Lanka. She is determined to make a difference to the lives of all people with autism and Asperger syndrome in her island home.
