Singapore named Orchid as Dendrobium Mahinda Shiranthi
Singapore today (Feb. 15) named an orchid after the visiting Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapaksa and first lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa at the national orchid garden.
Both were offered flowers of the Dendrobium Mahinda Shiranthi by Poon Hong Yean, head of the national botanical gardens.
According to a statement by the presidential media unit, Mr. Yean has said that it took them seven years to develop the new orchid, a cross between Elizabeth and Michika varieties.
The Sri Lankan delegation, also comprising minister G.L. Peiris, secretary to the president Lalith Weeratunga and Lankan high commissioner Ferial Ashroff, visited the 105-acre orchid garden, a tradition followed by visiting dignitaries.
