Common candidate, Maithripala Sirisena ?
The common candidate who would be fielded at the Presidential election is none other than Sri Lanka Freedom Party General Secretary - Minister Maithripala Sirisena, according to SLM. The website says that he is being unanimously backed by religious leaders, all masses as well as by many political parties including the UNP, SLFP, TNA, SLMC, JHU, JVP and DP.
After a meeting between the UNP leaders including party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe and Karu Jayasuriya, Ven. Maduluwawe Sobhitha Thera of the National Movement for a Just Society was informed of the decision to field Maithripala Sirisena as the common candidate to abolish executive presidency. The announcement is to be formally announced after tonight's UNP Working Committee meeting.
Meanwhile, Minister Wimal Weerwansa's 'Lanka C News' website reports that Minister Maithripala Sirisena and 20 other Ministers have informed that they would work towards the defeat of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
SLFP General Secretary Minister Maithripala Sirisena addressing an event at Battaramulla a short while ago said, ‘this may be my last state function’, amid widespread speculation that he might break ranks with the incumbent regime.
“Time solves a lot of things. This may be my last state function. People give power not to abuse it and make money. It’s given to serve the people. This power should never be abused. No one should be drunk with power,” he said at a function to appoint officials to the Health Ministry.
It was rumoured that the minister had earlier rejected an invitation to address the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) news Conference scheduled to be held at the party headquarters in Darley Road.
