Court order given to arrest Duminda Silva

Courts have ordered the CID special investigation unit to immediately arrest MP Duminda Silva in connection with the gunning down of presidential advisor Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra and three others on October 08.

Colombo additional magistrate Prasanna de Alwis today (Nov. 15) issued the order.

Officials of the CID special investigation unit were absent at the hearing, which forced the court to put off the hearing for five minutes.

After the hearing resumed, ASP Shani Abeysekara of the CID told the court there was inadequate evidence to arrest MP Silva.

However, considering the evidence placed before him, the additional magistrate ordered the immediate arrest of the MP.

Making submissions on behalf of the aggrieved party, president’s counsel Tirantha Waraliyadde said the CID officials’ avoidance of the hearing was a demeaning act and asked that warrants be issued against them.

MP Silva is now said to be receiving treatment at a private hospital in Singapore.

He was taken there on November 02 by a specially chartered jet.
