Returns to Sri Lanka halt boats - Australia

Returning people to Sri Lanka is reducing the number of asylum seekers from the Asian nation arriving by boat in Australia, Immigration Minister Chris Bowen says.

"We have returned around 700 people involuntarily to Sri Lanka, and we have seen the number of people coming from Sri Lanka fall to a trickle," Mr Bowen told Sky News on Wednesday.

The federal government began returning Sri Lankans last August as part of its suite of measures to stem boat arrivals to Australia.

"We took the tough decision to return people to Sri Lanka when they're not refugees," Mr Bowen said.

Mr Bowen said three Sri Lankans had come to Australia by boat this January.

So far more than 400 people have arrived by boat this month, with most from Afghanistan, Iran and some from Iraq, the minister said.

This was down from 1000 in December and 2000 a month in the months before December, he said.

Mr Bowen said the number of arrivals was typically lower in January due to the weather, but other factors such as the returns to Sri Lanka, and uncertainty about the time asylum seekers would spend on Papua New Guinea's Manus Island and Nauru were having an impact.

The coalition has criticised the government about the surge in the number of boats arriving in Australia over recent years but Mr Bowen said the opposition's policies would fail to halt the boat arrivals.

"When (opposition leader) Tony Abbott gets up and says `I will stop the boats', well he doesn't have any policy to back it up," Mr Bowen said.

He said the government had reopened the offshore processing detention centres on Nauru and Papua New Guinea's Manus Island previously used by the Howard coalition government.

"His other big policy is to turn back the boats," Mr Bowen said.

But the minister said Indonesia was unlikely to allow a coalition government to implement that policy.

Former Indonesian vice-president Jusuf Kalla on Wednesday criticised key elements of the Australian opposition's border protection policies, including Tony Abbott's plan to turn back asylum-seeker boats.

In 2001, the Howard government successfully turned back four boats to Indonesia.

NDT to be relocated at Homagama

The Moratuwa University said it would relocate the National Diploma in Technology (NDT) programme to a new location in Homagama.

This step is being taken to prevent further friction between student groups in the university following a recent attack which left some students critically injured and university facilities severely damaged.

Some 700 NDT students are alleged to have attacked students of the Moratuwa University Engineering Faculty on January 16 leading to the Engineering Faculty coming to a standstill.

University Vice Chancellor A.K.W. Jayawardane said the Engineering Faculty would remain closed until further notice and that a project to construct a new university building for the NDT programme would begin soon.

“This is a project that has been in the pipeline for a long time. It is not something that we thought of overnight as a result of the recent clash,” Professor Jayawardene said.

All what I want is to get back to my earlier life - Achala

The Matara Hospital doctor said to be responsible for the amputation of a hand of law student Achala Priyadarshani has said that he was sorry about the incident. He has told a team of doctors inquiring into the amputation that he did not expect the plastering of the girl’s hand following a fall to have such an adverse impact on her life.

The doctor has said that it was the first such incident in his professional career.

Meanwhile, there have been allegations of biased by the inquiry team, as some of its members are serving at the Matara Hospital.

Now, the call is for the appointment of retired judges to investigate the amputation incident.

The final year law student Achala Priyadharashini, who lost an arm due to medical negligence, told  that she wanted to pursue her career in law and that she had to make many sacrifices to gain admission to the university.

Achala lost her left arm due to alleged medical negligence by her surgeon. She was initially admitted to the Matara hospital for treatment to an injury on the wrist. She was thereafter admitted to the Colombo National Hospital where her arm was amputated because the injury turned septic.

“I don’t intend on taking legal action on this matter right now, all what I want is to get back to my earlier life. I want to live like I did before. I reached the present position in my academic career amid severe difficulties. I want to finish off my degree and become a lawyer, for all this I want my hand, the hand I use to write with,” said Achala, who is a final-year student of the Colombo Law Faculty.

Achala said this unfortunate mishap would not keep her down because she will be sitting the final exams at the Law Faculty in June this year. She said the faculty had given her the necessary facilities to study online as she cannot attend lectures.

“I will fulfill my ambition of becoming lawyer despite this calamity,” she said and added that her batch mates at the faculty were helping her at this difficult hour. She said her parents have decided to reside in Colombo temporarily till the crisis she is struggling with is sorted out.

The Colombo law faculty has set up a fund in aid of Achala, and details can be obtained via telephone numbers 0715 114 139, 0718 825 329 and 0712 240 405.
