Aravinda heads new cricket selection panel

By Channaka de Silva

Sports Minister C.B. Ratnayake has sacked the national cricket selectors headed by Asantha de Mel and appointed a fresh set of selectors headed by batting legend Aravinda de Silva.

The Minister said that his move was aimed at bringing an “auspicious future” to the game of cricket in Sri Lanka.

The new selection panel under de Silva includes two former Sri Lanka wicket keeper batsmen Amal Silva and Ranjith Fernando together with Shabir Asgerally who has not played cricket for Sri Lanka.

“I have appointed stalwarts of cricket in this country for the job. They have cricket in their bodies. This is a move aimed at bringing an auspicious future to Sri Lanka’s cricket. We have to prepare for the next World Cup which is barely ten months away. It is the most important thing in my mind, and appointing new selectors is my first step towards winning that World Cup” said the Minister.

Sri Lanka will be one of the co-hosts of the 2011 Cricket World Cup.

“I did not have to consult Sri Lanka Cricket for my move. I appointed the new selectors under the powers vested in me as the Sports Minister” declared the Minister.

Minister said he simply felt that the sacked selectors had been serving for too long.

“I am not unhappy with the job they did. But seven years is too long a time to serve as a national selector. When you serve in such a capacity for too long, so many questions crop up” said the Minister.

The sacked panel under de Mel included Don Anurasiri, Chaminda Mendis and Vinodhan John.

De Mel who came under heavy criticism in recent times following the Twenty20 World Cup which just concluded in the West Indies served as the Chairman of the national selectors since May 24, 2004 when he replaced Lalith Kaluperuma.

Asgerally also served in the panel appointed in 2004 under De Mel.

Ajantha mendis with his GIRL FRIEND ( NEW )

Ajantha Mendis (born March 11, 1985 in Moratuwa) is a cricketer who plays for the Sri Lankan national cricket team.
Mendis, although classified as slow-medium, bowls a mixture of deliveries, including googlies, off-breaks, top-spinners, flippers and leg-breaks, as well as the Carrom Ball, released with a flick of his middle finger. For Sri Lanka Army in 2007-08 he averaged a mere 10.56 and took 46 wickets in six games, his strike rate a startling 31. This gained him a call-up to the full Sri Lanka squad for the Caribbean tour in April 2008.

He is with his Girl friend....

IIFA Launches in SRI LANKA

Colombo: Sri Lanka will host the top Indian film actors for the annual "Bollywood Oscars" weekend showcasing one of the world's most ambitious and prolific film industries, officials said on Tuesday.

The three-day International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) event from June 3-5 will feature premieres, celebrity parties, fashion shows and a Twenty20 cricket match.

It will culminate in the glittering 11th annual awards ceremony in Colombo's biggest sports stadium, which organisers say will be attended by 500 guests and watched by 600 million TV viewers in 110 nations.

"This is a very rare and wonderful opportunity for Sri Lanka. Thanks to the prevailing peace, Sri Lanka has received international recognition," Duleep Mudadeniya, who heads the tourism bureau, told reporters.

Celebrities expected to attend include famous Indian acting dynasty the Bachchans — father Amitabh, son Abhishek and his wife, former Miss World Aishwarya Rai.

IIFA brand ambassador Amitabh Bachchan said he hoped the decision to bring the event to Colombo — which comes after the end of the island's long civil war last year — would encourage collaboration.

"It is not purely about films, it is also about business networking and cross-cultural exchange. It is like a combination of Cannes and the Oscars," Bachchan told reporters in Colombo.

The awards, first staged in 2000, are held outside India every year in an effort to increase the international profile of Bollywood films.

After the first IIFA awards in London, Hindi cinema ticket sales grew 35 percent in Britain over the following six months, organisers said. Other sites have included Macau, Johannesburg and Amsterdam.

Bachchan said previous cities that hosted the event had since become popular sites for Indian films.

"The potential to film in this part of the world (Sri Lanka) remains untapped, and this could change after IIFA," Bachchan said.
