What happened to children of ministers, MPs ?
Children of several ministers and politicians contested the local government election.
This is how they fared:
UPFA
Hirunika Premachandra (daughter of the late Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra) – 139,034 votes (1st in Colombo)
Senal Welgama (son of minister Kumar Welgama) – 115,385 votes (1st in Kalutara)
Malsha Kumaratunga (daughter of minister Jeevan Kumaratunga) – 43,324 votes (5th in Colombo)
Pasindu Yapa Abeywardena (son of minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena) – 76,870 votes (1st in Matara)
Randima Gamage (son of minister Piyasena Gamage) – 38,168 votes (4th in Galle)
|Isuru Dodangoda (son of late minister Amarasiri Dodangoda) – 23,920 votes (9th in Galle)
Kanchana Wijesekara (son of former minister Mahinda Wijesekara) – 31,422 votes (5th in Matara)
UNP
Kavinda Jayawardena (son of late Dr. Jayalath Jayawardena) – 41,654 votes (2nd in Gampaha)
Tharaka Nanayakkara (son of Hemakumara Nanayakkara) – 10,629 votes (11th in Galle, but lost)
Chatura Galappatti (son of Justin Galappatti) – 27,930 votes (1st in Matara)
‘Hirunika, not the 1st to win through sympathy votes’ - Udaya
UPFA Colombo group leader Udaya Gammanpila says he is happy to have come second at the election after campaigning in a manner that protected both the environment and ethics.
He has told that he congratulates Hirunika Premachandra, a novice, for having come first.
She is not the first to do so through
sympathy votes, he said, pointing out Sirimavo Bandaranaike, Chandrika
Kumaratunga, Sumedha Jayasena, Sudarshini Fernandopulle as the previous
examples.
He has also said that the UPFA has suffered a setback at the election, as it has lost 87,000 votes.
The UPFA candidate has also said that it was up to the president to decide who should be the chief minister.
He has added that he would present his election budget within the next fortnight.

Hirunika, Prasanna take the lead... Nadeesha, Anarkali both out
Counting of preferential votes in the Western and South Provincial council polls have now commenced and according to unconfirmed reports, UPFA candidates Hirunika Premachandra and Prasanna Ranatuna have taken the lead in the Colombo and Gampaha districts respectively.
Reports further say that Ranatunga has
obtained over 100,000 preferential votes than Nimal Lanza who also
contested from the Gampaha district under the UPFA ticket.
Popular actresses Nadeesha Hemamali and
Anarkali Janeetha Jayatillake who both contested from Matara district
have failed to secure victory at the Southern Provincial Council polls,
reports say.

UNP, JVP fail to win a single council
Voter turn out over 60 percent
Welikanda Pradeshiya Sabha have NO Opposition
The United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) secured a comfortable victory in the second phase of the Local Authorities election 2011 winning a total of 45 Local Councils out of 65 bodies. The main opposition United National Party (UNP) and the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) failed to win even a single Local Council at the election held on Saturday.
The win gave the UPFA control over 75 percent of Local Councils. The UPFA secured victory in 250 LG bodies out of 299.
The party won 205 LG bodies out of 234 in the first phase of elections held in March.
In the North, the UPFA secured victory in three Pradeshiya Sabhas, namely Kayts, Velanai and Delft.
The massive win gave the UPFA 512 seats out of 875 in 65 Local Councils. The Illankai Thamil Arusu Katchchi got 183 seats while the UNP had to be content with just 137 seats.
The JVP could only manage to get 13 of its members elected while the TULF which won two Councils in the Kilinochchi district, got 12 of its members elected. The government ally SLMC also won seven seats.
The ITAK won 18 Local Authorities and TULF two.
All nine members of the Welikanda Pradeshiya Sabha have been elected from the ruling United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) and its ally the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC).Of the elected members to the Pradeshiya Sabha 8 were from the UPFA with one member representing the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC). Therefore the Welikanda Pradeshiya Sabha would have no opposition members, the General Secretary of Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) Maithripala Sirisena said.
Meanwhile, Elections chief Mahinda Deshapriya said that the polling was conducted successfully and in a peaceful atmosphere in all areas.
“No major incident had happened during or after polling,” he added.
Election watch dog PAFFREL too said that there were no major incidents during polling day. It said that barring a few minor incidents, the election was held in a very peaceful manner.
The overall voter turnout was more than 60 percent. In the north too, voter turnout exceeded 50 percent. Most voters in the North voted in the polls for the first time since the defeat of the LTTE. n March 17, this year, elections were held for 234 of the 335 local authorities in the country. Elections for 65 councils were postponed due to legal challenges against rejection of nominations.

Speaking to reporters a short while ago the President said that the results of the polls had proven that the people had an awareness of the democratic process and said that the people could now come together to build the country.
President Mahinda Rajapakse added that it was now clear that the people of Sri Lanka were all equal and that he was now the president of the whole of Sri Lanka including those that had not voted for him.

Genaral Enters the Race
General Sarath Fonseka is seen here entering the press briefing where he talked about his political ambitions and his move to run for the Presidency as the Opposition Common Candidate in January next year. He was addressing his maiden press conference at the Jaic Hilton in Colombo today.
General Sarath Fonseka says he will contest under the “Swan” symbol when contesting as a common candidate of the opposition for the Presidency during the Presidential elections next year. He also said that he will run for Presidency under a newly registered party.

Celebrating the General’s news
People were seen celebrating the news of General Sarath Fonseka acknowledging the fact that he will run for Presidency in January 2010. General Fonseka acknowledged this while speaking to news reporters a short while ago.
