We’ve no foreign bank accounts - Namal Rajapaksha

MP Namal Rajapaksa, eldest son of ex-president Mahinda Rajapaksa, says neither he nor any of his brothers are having bank accounts in foreign countries.

He is making comments to BBC Sandeshaya regarding media reports that a court order is to be obtained to freeze a foreign bank account belonging to the son of a former VVIP.

Namal says all their assets have been declared to the elections chief and parliament, and described it as malicious mud-slinging.

However, minister Rajitha Senaratne says top officials of a bank in Dubai have confirmed an account belonging to the son of a former VVIP had more than one billion dollars.

Another son of this VVIP had sought the president’s permission to go to this same country for treatment to a sports injury, and there is talk that he had then changed the account to another country, said Senaratne.

Namal challenges accusers to prove these allegations aimed at insulting his family, charging the government of trying to cover up the wave of crimes in the country by leveling charges against them.
Responding, Senaratne says the charges could be challenged when legal action is taken as per reports of the US institution presently carrying out investigations in that regard.

Meanwhile, Democratic Party leader Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka says if the present regime fails to prove Rajapaksas’ wrongdoing, it will have to be said publicly that they had done no such things.

Rajapaksa Fears Prosecution of Entire Family By new Government

Former Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Friday expressed fears that the new government led by his successor Maithripala Sirisena might end up prosecuting his entire family, a day after his two younger brothers faced questioning by anti-graft investigators.

“Next, it will be Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Mahinda Rajapaksa, Namal Rajapaksa and Yoshitha Rajapaksa”, the former President said.

Namal — a Parliamentarian — and Yoshitha are Rajapaksa’s sons while Gotabhaya is his younger brother.

Rajapaksa’s comments came after he visited his youngest brother Basil Rajapaksa at the national hospital where he is warded under remand custody.

Basil Rajapaksa, the economic development minister in his older brother’s nearly decade long rule, was arrested on Wednesday by the police’s Financial Crime Investigation Unit.

He was accused of misappropriating 77 million rupees of state funds meant for livelihood development.

Rajapaksa said his family was being hounded by the Sirisena government on trumped up charges.

Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who served as the powerful defence ministry secretary, appeared on Thursday for the second time before the anti-graft commission as Basil faced his own interrogation behind bars.

The new government has pursued complaints of misdeeds under Rajapaksa’s regime and several top ranking officials have already faced prosecution.

How Rajapaksas misused super luxury CHOGM buses

Misuse of luxury buses by the Rajapaksa administration during the Commonwealth Heads of State meeting in Colombo in November 2013 has come under investigation by the Foreign Affairs Ministry.

The luxury buses had been acquired by MP Namal Rajapaksa, for Minister Sajin Vaas Gunawardena and the former Chief Minister of the Uva Province Sachinda Rajapaksa and given on lease by the Lanka Ashok Leyland Company.

As much as Rs.900,000 a month was paid for the buses and the Foreign Affairs Ministry had paid a whopping Rs.25 million and it is not known for what purpose the two buses were used.

Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera ordered the investigation after the two buses were brought and parked at the Ministry premises without anyone's knowledge.

Further inquiries will be conducted by the Criminal Investigations Department in consultation with the secretary of the Foreign Affairs Ministry, a spokesman said.

A special feature of these two luxury buses is that they are highly advanced in transport and passenger comfort which other luxury buses don't have.

Below are pictures of former Uva Chief Minister Shashinda Rajapaksa travelling in one of the luxury buses.

My brothers asked not to attend rugger practice - Namal

Hambantota UPFA MP Namal Rajapaksa said that his two younger brothers -Yoshitha and Rohitha who were members of the Sri Lanka Army and Navy rugger teams, were asked not to attend rugby practice without citing any reasons.

“Just a few days ago, my brothers – Rohitha and Yoshitha – were both informed, by telephone, not to attend rugby practice. No reasons were given. They were just asked not to come,” Mr.Rajapaksa said in his personal blog.

Earlier media reports said Yoshitha and Rohitha were to be removed from the captaincy of the Rugby teams of the Navy and Army respectively, on the instructions of a highly placed official.

Mr. Rajapaksa also said that his family decided to respect the request and not to question the decision ‘regardless of how unjust it seems.’ “Not wanting to tarnish the sport through any potential conflict, we took a decision to simply respect the request and not question the decision regardless of how unjust it seems. Though deeply hurtful, we felt this would be the best decision we could make at this time,” he said.

The full statement issued by Mr. Rajapaksa

Having begun playing around the age of six, we played during school, during college, captained university teams and finally represented Sri Lanka internationally. In addition to enjoying the game, in recent years, we also tried to do whatever we could to elevate the sport in Sri Lanka for younger generations that will follow us in the years to come.

In this effort, we brought down internationally-acclaimed rugby players to Sri Lanka and worked to get access for our players to obtain playing experience abroad. In all honesty, we simply enjoyed playing the game. And as we began to reach the final stages of our sports careers, we felt like we should try to give back to a sport that had given us all so much.

I think and hope that these efforts would have made at least a small contribution to the development of the game. Today, we’re incredibly saddened to see that the bitter, vengeful politics that took over this country after elections earlier this month, have even made its way to the sports sector. Just a few days ago, my brothers – Rohitha and Yoshitha – were both informed, by telephone, not to attend rugby practice. No reasons were given.

They were just asked not to come. Not wanting to tarnish the sport through any potential conflict, we took a decision to simply respect the request and not question the decision regardless of how unjust it seems. Though deeply hurtful, we felt this would be the best decision we could make at this time. For some, rugby was also a part of politics.

But for the three of us, it was the sport we loved. On behalf of both of my brothers and myself, I want express our deepest gratitude to all those who supported us during our rugby careers. I think you all know how sincerely we loved the game. And if given the opportunity, we will never hesitate for a moment to contribute to the development of the sport in any way that we can.

Yoshitha's CSN to close ? One Billion Tax Throws Company Into Deep Crisis

It looks as if Carlton Sports Network a TV channel started by the sons of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa is on the verge of a serious financial crisis which could even lead to its closure.

The government through its interim budget which was presented to Parliament yesterday imposed a onetime tax of Rs. 1 billion on all sports networks that dodged taxation. Although Capital Maharaja Organization also has a sports channel, the TV station, according to sources, has a clean tax file.

Sources from CSN told on Friday that the company was not in a position to pay Rs. 1 billion to the government by way of taxes. This means the company which is also on the verge of losing its cricket broadcasting rights has been plunged into a serious financial crisis.

In this context, observers say, the closure of the controversial sports channel, is very much written on the wall.

Meanwhile, a Cabinet sub committee was also set up to look into the possibility granting broadcasting rights of international cricket matches to Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation and Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation a privilege that was enjoyed by CSN, run by the Rajapaksa sons.

It was awarded the rights for three years by Sri Lanka Cricket in May 2012, despite an earlier Cabinet decision to award the rights to SLRC. At the time, speculation was rife that the deal was fraudulent.

A month later, Sri Lanka Cricket was forced to admit that CSN did belong to Namal Rajapaksa and Yoshitha Rajapaksa, the two elder sons of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

However, SLC defended the decision to award rights to CSN, claiming that the deal took place according to proper procedures.

Namal receives death threats

UPFA Hambantota district Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa has complained to the Tangalle Police last evening claiming that he had received death threats over the phone, the Police said.

Police Spokesman Ajith Rohana said, Mr. Rajapaksa in his complaint stated that he had received calls from one number on four occasions between 11 p.m. to 12 midnight on Tuesday. The caller had threatened Mr.Rajapaksa to resign from politics or otherwise he would be killed, SSP Rohana said. Police have launched investigations into the complaint, he added.

Slamming the allegations raised against him, Rajapaksa in his blog said “As you may have already heard, certain individuals are coming after me with a vengeance, trying to implicate me in a number of alleged wrongdoings.

We expected this. Those who are older than I am will remember well that this is the usual fate that members of the SLFP must suffer whenever we lose elections. It has happened in the past, and the same is happening this time also. We welcome the new government’s initiatives of “good governance,” but we make a strong appeal not to allow certain individuals misuse this initiative to fulfill personal vendettas under the guise of “good governance.”

Western Provincial Councilor Udaya Gammanpila while addressing a press conference held in Colombo , yesterday, said that he also received death threatening messages.

Rajapaksa Sons To Lead Army & Navy Rugby Teams

The Sri Lanka Rugby Union said that Yoshitha Rajapaksa would remain as the Captain of the Sri Lanka Navy Rugby team and Rohitha Rajapaksa would be the Captain of the Sri Lanka Army Rugby team despite speculations that the Rajapaksa sons will be pulled out of Rugby squads.

Upon further inquiry, the officials of the Sri Lanka Army and Sri Lanka Navy Rugby federations had told media that former Mahinda Rajapaksa’s two sons would take part in the upcoming Dialog Rugby tournament in their regular positions.

It was widely speculated that the sons of former President Rajapaksa had left the country following the presidential election.

Three sons of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, namely Namal Rajapaksa, Yoshitha Rajapaksa and Rohitha Rajapaksa are prominent members of the national Rugby team.

Provincial Council member and JHU stalwart Nishantha Sri Warnasinghe said a comprehensive inquiry would be conducted into activities of members of the Rajapaksa family in the field of Rugby. He also added that the new government had received a number of complaints with regard to the conduct of the “princes” of the Rajapaksa family.

He also added that the members of the “nil balakaya”, a youth organization set up by the sons of the former President, would be rehabilitated.

We won’t allow political revenge to take place. We have all the details, files and evidence to support our claims. We will take action against corrupt personnel regardless of their political affiliation or status,” JVP Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake told a news conference today.

He said they would follow up their complaints to the Commission and observe how the investigations are progressing. “If the Bribery Commission fails to carry out proper and prompt investigations on complaints as it used to do in the past, we will make sure that the errant commissioners who are delaying investigations be removed from the Commission,” Mr. Dissanayake said.
