UPFA Colombo group leader Udaya Gammanpila says he is happy to have come second at the election after campaigning in a manner that protected both the environment and ethics.
He has told that he congratulates Hirunika Premachandra, a novice, for having come first.
She is not the first to do so through
sympathy votes, he said, pointing out Sirimavo Bandaranaike, Chandrika
Kumaratunga, Sumedha Jayasena, Sudarshini Fernandopulle as the previous
examples.
He has also said that the UPFA has suffered a setback at the election, as it has lost 87,000 votes.
The UPFA candidate has also said that it was up to the president to decide who should be the chief minister.
He has added that he would present his election budget within the next fortnight.
