Aliraja to buy state-owned shares in Telecom & Lanka Hospitals

It was reported that Lycamobile owner Subaskaran Aliraja, who has become the ultimate owner of three radio and television channels in Sri Lanka, has offered to buy state-owned shares in Sri Lanka Telecom PLC and Lanka Hospital PLC.

The Cabinet approved to sell the shares owned by the state in these two companies.

In a notification to the Colombo Stock Exchange, Sri Lanka Telecom PLC and Lanka Hospital PLC said that the sale of these shares will take place as recommended by the State Enterprise Reform Unit established under the Ministry of Finance, Economic Stabilization and National Policy.

The Treasury holds 49.50% of the issued share capital of Sri Lanka Telecom PLC.

Meanwhile, 51.34% of the share capital of Lanka Hospital PLC is held by the Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation on behalf of the State.

How Aliraja owned TV & Radio channels!

Aliraja is currently the owner of EAP Broadcasting Networks which operates two television channels including Swarnavahini and 3 radio channels.

He also owns Sky Media Networks that operates two TV channels including Sitha TV and 3 Radio channels as well as Max Broadcasting Networks which operates one TV channel and radio channel each.

Although arrangements have been made to show this as a local investment, it is said that this is completely a foreign investment.

However, economists are of the opinion that Aliraja, who has made huge investments in the Indian film industry, taking over these media networks and telecom and communication networks will have a powerful impact on Sri Lanka’s national security and economy.

Swarnavahini deal

The media earlier reported how he invested money in Swarnavahini still remains a secret, and how he had credited the funds from an account which is not under his name to make the investment.

The State Intelligence Service informed the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) and the Ministry of Mass Media that several directors of the foreign company, which bought shares of the EAP Group of Companies including the ‘Swarnavahini’ media network which was facing a financial crisis, had maintained close connections with the LTTE.

The Ministry of Defence has informed the TRC and the Ministry of Mass Media on November 15, 2019 through letter number MOD / TEC / 01 / MGMR Network / 2019 (04).

A portion of the assets of EAP Group of Companies had been purchased for Ben Holdings Pvt Ltd.

How Subaskaran violated Companies Act

Today, this company has been able to indirectly obtain 60% ownership of Swarnavahini by violating the laws and regulations of Sri Lanka.

This is because Ben Holdings Private Company has bought 40% of shares while an individual by the name Alex Lowell has bought the remaining 20% of shares.

Meanwhile, 40% of the shares owned by Swarnamahal, EAP Films and other companies belonging to the EAP Business Group are owned by a Singaporean company, Blue Summit Capital.

It was revealed that three members of Ben Holdings Pvt. Ltd had direct links with the LTTE when the company was attempting to buy MGMR Networks owned by MGM Networks Pvt. Ltd.

Before buying a TV channel, the directors of the company that was making the purchase must obtain a clearance certificate from the Defence Ministry. Accordingly, this information was revealed when they were trying to get the relevant clearance certificate.

The directors were not required to obtain clearance certificates from the Defence Ministry when buying Swarnavahini since the license of the TV station was old.

It was revealed that  Subaskaran Aliraja, who was born in Mullaitivu, Sri Lanka and later moved to France and became a millionaire, has funded all parties including Ben Holdings Pvt. Ltd, Blue Summit Capital and Alex Lowell.

He is said to be a strong financial supporter of the British Conservative Party and former Prime Minister John Major.

Sri Lanka the Miracle of Asia ::: Hill Country - Nuwaraeliya

The Nuwara Eliya ‘season’ is begins in April, being very warm in Colombo, many prefer to go to the hills and enjoy the cool climes of Nuwara Eliya situated 6,182 feet (1,884 meters) above sea level. There are many hotels and guest houses for the visitors to stay. Many activities are planned during the season to keep them busy.
To go back to the history of Nuwara Eliya, it was ‘discovered’ during the time of the British rule in Sri Lanka (then Ceylon). It is recorded that in 1819 a British hunting party found the place. By 1825, Nuwara Eliya was accepted as a health resort and came to be known as a ‘hill station’.

In 1846, a well-known British explorer, Sir Samuel Baker (he is best known for his Nile discoveries) fell under its spell when he spent two weeks convalescing from malaria and planned to make it his home. He returned two years later and built a mini English country town including a bailiff (an official like the present day Mayor), famous English cows, sheep and even a blacksmith and a forge.

The stuff had been taken up in bullock wagons and elephant carts. It did not take much time for Nuwara Eliya to be accepted as the first among the country’s hill resorts. The beautiful scenery among the hills, the cool climate, ideal ground conditions to grow flowers and vegetables - all these made it a popular resort.

The houses that were built in the early days were typically ‘Old English’. The architectural designs were based on what was then popular in England. Each one had a garden in the best English tradition with immaculate lawn and box hedges.

Fishing being a popular hobby among the Englishmen, they painstakingly imported milt and hatched brown and rainbow trout and filled the streams around Nuwara Eliya. Golf being their favourite sport, a beautiful 18-hole golf course was built. It remains a very popular spot among both local and foreign golfers and is considered as one of the most scenic golf courses in the world.

The Hill Club - the gray stone mansion on a low hill overlooking the golf course - remains as it looked when originally built in 1876. Mounted heads of leopards, boar and wild animals stare at you from the polished oak walls. The Grand Hotel has also been built in the old English tradition. The post office is authentic English - so is the Anglican church in the town.
In the middle of the town is the Victoria Park which boasts of lovely flower beds. Close by is the race course which becomes active in April. A little beyond is Lake Gregory where there is boating.

Some of the best tea plantations in Sri Lanka are in Nuwara Eliya. They are a treat to the eye giving the impression of a thick green carpet being laid in a vast area.

Nuwara Eliya is at the foot of Pidurutalagala, which offers a pleasant climb to hikers. It’s not a difficult climb though Mt Pedro is the highest point (8,281 ft-2,524m) in the Island. One can reach the summit in about two hours.

Hakgala Botanical Gardens is only a few miles away and is well-known for its collection of roses and ferns. Originally it was an experimental cinchona plantation for the production of the malaria antidote quinine set up in 1860.

From Nuwara Eliya, one can also get to Horton Plains and from there walk to the World’s End, considered the finest view in all of Sri Lanka. Of course, it’s on a clear day that one can get the best view. The deep precipice drops vertically for about 1,000 feet (328 meters) and falls away almost as steeply for another 4,000 ft (1,312m) and is a breathtaking sight.

Sri Lanka the Miracle of Asia ::: Wild Life

Sri Lanka is ranked amongst the world’s twenty five biodiversity hot spots. As a country with high rate of endemism it has many faunal groups including birds , mammals , reptiles and amphibians which you can not find anywhere in the world. It is world renowned as one of the best places to watch elephants and leopards for nature enthusiastic and photographers. There are season for elephant gathering where large concentration of wild elephants together can be seen during that time at a place known as Minneriya in the north central province of the country. Primate safaris are arranged with cultural tours as it is possible to find wide range of primates in place surrounded by cultural heritages mainly in the dry zone. During the early part of the year ( January-April) , the largest animal ever lived in the world you may guess as ‘ blue whale’ can be seen in off shores of southern city Galle. Sinharaja, the tropical rainforest of the country is the place to glue one’s eyes on to the world’s largest mixed species of birds flocking together.

One of the key reasons which makes Sri Lanka a popular wild life destination is the availability of expertise , well trained field guides and simple photographic guides, booklets and posters of key wild life attractions such as elephants, leopards, birds, butterflies , primates and floral species to the enthusiast. Sri Lankan tour operators too are equipped with sophisticated technologies , marketing strategies and high caliber service levels to attract ever increasing tourist both from west and east with wild life as main interest for significant proportion of them. Communication is no barrier as in Sri Lanka as tourist industry professionals are well equipped with skills in English and even with other foreign languages to respond the needs of the foreign visitors effectively.
