Two private buses to operate on Southern Expressway from Friday



Passenger transport via private buses on the Southern Highway will commence on January 27 while two private buses have been permitted, the National Transport Commission (NTC) stated.

The two private buses will work in accordance with the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) bus schedule while the NTC stated that more buses will be employed for passenger transport on the Southern Expressway in the near future.

Looks like Romance is in the air for singers Natasha Perera and Prihan Madappuli. On New Year’s eve, the duo has been spotted at Rajagiriya, enjoying a romantic evening over coffee according to a leading web site.

Though there relationship is not exactly new, less tongues are set wagging, as Natasha’s grandmother chaperones Natasha nearly everywhere, reports say.

Earlier, it was reported that Natasha and Prihan gatecrashed a party.

Reports added that Natasha’s grandmother too was present when the incident took place.

Natasha rose to fame with the duet 'Sulangak Wee', which she sang with veteran singer Edward Jayakody, when she was just a child.

Prihan, became popular with the release of the track 'Yayata Paayana Po Daa Sanda' featuring Iraj.

Nehara Peiris and Menaka Rajapakse in US

Popular artistes Nehara Peiris and Menaka Rajapakse are in Boston, reports say.

They are there for shooting of ‘Aadaraneeya Niagara,’ which is the first ever Sri Lankan teledrama in the United States.

The 36-episode ‘Adaraneeya Niagara’ revolves around two Sri Lankan immigrant families living separately in a vast society and are unexpectedly brought together by the hidden past incidents of their lives.
However, sources say that this tour has fueled speculations that there is a budding romance between Nehara and Menaka after Nehara’s split from her husband - Nirmal Perera.

Nirmal, being a professional IT guy, had handled Nehara’s campaign for the most popular actress award.

After her marriage all her finances had been handled by Nirmal, who would even decide on the Nehara's fees for her performances, sources say.

Chrihashni Nehara Canishia Pieris, better known as Nehara Pieris, became popular for her performances in teledramas ‘Ruwan Maliga’, and ‘Amanda’.

Many know her as 'Muthu Kirilli' following her impressive performance in the 'Tele Drama' Muthu Kirilli.

She was named most Popular Actress thrice at Sumathi and Raigam Tele awards.

Making her debut through advertisements on Lanka Bell and Dialog, Nehara rose to fame after presenting programs ‘Saagare Se Aadare’ aired on Sri FM and ‘Magic Box’ telecast on Sirasa and ‘Tea Party’ telecast on ‘Derana TV’

Nehara, who is lovingly known as 'cookie' among her loved ones, also displayed her dancing skills in ‘Sirasa Dancing Stars’ (Season 1) and was placed fifth in the competition.

In 2008, Nehara released her much anticipated hit music single, Malpethi while ‘Aadara Heena’, a duet with local film star Roshan Ranawana.

Peradeniya university Student injured during protest at Galaha junction

A demonstration organised by the Students' Union of the Peradeniya University was held at the Galaha Junction yesterday ( 24 ).

The demonstration was held in protest of the activities at the Ministry of Higher Education and
disciplinary action taken by the university administration against twenty five students.

The students who gathered opposite the university proceeded in a protest march towards the Kandy - Colombo main road.
Police barricades were placed at the Galaha Junction to prevent them from proceeding further.

A tense situation arose when the protesters attempted to march on.

Meanwhile, a student was injured when an iron fence that was put in place by the police toppled.

The injured student was admitted to the Peradeniya Hospital.

The protesters who demonstrated at the Galaha Junction subsequently dispersed.




2 years since Ekneligoda disappearance



Today (Jan. 24) marks a two year period since the disappearance of journalist Prageeth Ekneligoda.

Probes on his disappearance remain incomplete and no suspects have been arrested in regard with the case.

Earlier, former Attorney General Mohan Peiris made a statement that Ekneligoda was overseas, under political asylum.

The wife Ekneligoda - Sandhya Ekneligoda later wrote to the UN Committee against Torture regarding Peiris' statement.
