Sri Lankan Remanded for misappropriating property of Hollywood actress

A Sri Lankan who had allegedly misappropriated Rs.17.8 million from Sri Lankan properties belonging to popular Hollywood actress of X-Files fame Gillian Anderson, was remanded till January 4 by a Colombo Court.

Making a complaint with CID, a British national complained that the suspect Anura Rathne Herath had been entrusted to administrate the American actress’ properties located in the Pasyala area and thereby committed this offence.

The complainant further alleged that the suspect had obtained Rs.17.8 million from another company affiliated to the concerned properties on service requirements.

Producing the suspect in court, the CID informed court that the investigations were conducted into an incident where the suspect had obtained Rs.6.8 million for the purpose of supplying electricity to the property. The CID further told court that investigations conducted so far had revealed that the suspect had also taken away a television valued at Rs.275,000 without the consent of the company.

Defence counsel Sudarshani Gunaratne appearing on behalf of the suspect denied the allegation levelled against her client and moved Court that the suspect be released on bail. Taking into consideration the fact that investigations were still proceeding, the magistrate Lanka Jayaratne ordered that the suspect be remanded till January 4.

1637 rape cases reported this year

An increase in statutory rape cases have been reported in the country, the police said yesterday. Police spokesman SP Ajith Rohana said that they have detected an increase in statutory rape cases this year when compared with previous years.

Statutory rape is when a person engages in sex with consent or without consent of an underage person.

SP Rohana said girls between the ages of 13 and 16 are especially vulnerable and are party to these cases.

“There is a moral obligation with all the stake holders in society to prevent such unfortunate incidents. The police are doing their part and up to now we have solved 1,400 rape cases having arrested all the suspects involved in these cases,” he said.

There should be awareness in society to curtail these incidents. The highest number of incidents was reported in the Western Province followed by the North Central Province, Sabaragamuwa Province and in the Southern Province.

“These underage girls should be taught about the consequences of their behaviour. Also the parents and their children should have a strong relationship,” he added.

A total of 1,637 rape cases had been reported to the police during this year, the police said.

Conspiracies against the government - Wimal Weerawansa

A series of conspiracies against the government is being conducted within the government itself, Minister Wimal Weerawansa says.

These conspiracies come to action through events which degrade the government in the eye of the public, such as incapability to issue correct AL results and using plastic crates instead of sacks, he said, addressing a seminar at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institution in Colombo.

Speaking, he said that the public is of the view that the government faces no challenge beyond the regime. The challenges lie within the government itself.

Noting that issues are created by deliberately making simple matters complex, the minister said that there are persons within the government who plot to wreak such havoc.

First shots were fired from Bharatha’s side - CID

The CID informed the court yesterday (Dec. 22) it was from the Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra’s side that the first shots were fired in the Mulleriyawa gunfight.

SP of the CID Shani Abeysekara told Colombo additional magistrate Prasanna Alwis that two spent cartridges found from the scene confirmed that.

The cartridges were from the bullets fired from sergeant J. Gamini, the bodyguard of the slain presidential advisor, said the police officer.

The court was taking up the murder of the presidential advisor and three others in the incident on October 08.
Sergeant Gamini is still receiving treatment at Narahenpita Police Hospital under CID custody.

MP Duminda Silva, also injured in the shootout, is being treated at a private hospital in Singapore.

He was taken there November 02 in a jet specially equipped to transport patients, police said.

President’s counsel Hemantha Warnakulasuriya, who represents MP Silva, on November 28 produced 19 photographs of a scan, showing injuries to his brain and skull as well and entry and exit points of the bullets.

His submission also claimed the firing took place as the MP was looking at the ground, and after an exchange of blows, Premachandra fell to the ground first and MP Silva fell on top of him.

The PC said it was questionable who had shot the MP, adding that everything had happened within a space of 30 seconds.

All the other shots were fired after the MP was shot, he claimed.

The case will be taken up again on January 03.
