Peradeniya campus suspends student unions

The Vice Chancellor of the Peradeniya University has suspended All Student Unions with effect from 2.00 pm today. The suspension came in light of the protest march the students had planned. The students were to come in procession from Peradeniya to Colombo but the march was halted due to a court order obtained against it.

The students then gathered at the Galaha Junction and were shouting slogans against the establishing of private universities, and the Minister of Higher Education S.B. Dissanayake amid heavy police and military presence. Subsequently leaders of the Student Unions addressed the gathering. Sources say that students from all Faculties and Unions participated in the protest.

The Vice Chancellor has issued notice suspending the Student Unions citing that the activities of the Unions has caused security concerns for the students and has also brought the university into disrepute. The Assistant Registrar in Charge of Student Affairs in the university has been ordered to seal all offices of the Unions and to take over the keys of the offices
