3 week military training for university students - SB

A three-week military training will be given to students who qualify for university entrance with the aim of helping develop their leadership qualities, said higher education minister S.B. Dissanayake.
He told the media today (Jan. 05) that the training would be given at local military camps prior to their enrolment.

Also, English will be made mandatory for all GCE Advanced Level students from next year, said the minister, adding however, that the marks they obtain at the examination for the language would be of no significance.

The minister added that legislation would be enacted to ban short-term diploma courses that have sprung up in the country.
