Many injured in Moratuwa University clash

The Moratuwa University has been closed indefinitely as students from the engineering faculty and the institute that offers national diploma in technology (NDT) said vice chancellor professor Ananda Jayawardane today (Jan 17.)

An engineering student was admitted to the national hospital in critical condition after the fight. A NDT student was arrested by Moratuwa police in connection with the assault and was presented before Moratuwa district court today. He was remanded till January 22. Another three engineering students were admitted to Colombo and Kalubowila hospitals.

“I feel that the attack was initiated by the NDT students,” Jayawardane said. Engineering students said that NDT students came to the Hostel A last night at 10.30 pm and assaulted around 40 students preparing for the final year exams. The clash which ensued lasted around three hours and engineering students claim that hundreds of armed NDT students attacked them. However only a few students were wounded.

This incident was the outcome of a minor incident that occurred on January 1, when an engineering student collided wit a motorcycle driven by a NDT student. The two sides share a history of animosity which dates a few decades back.
