The
bodies of sixteen persons who were killed owing to the tense situation
at the Welikada Prison have been brought to the Colombo National
Hospital.
Prison Commissioner General P.W.Kodipili stated that a further eleven bodies have now been found within the prison premises.
He added that while the number of prisoners who escaped have not been confirmed as yet, they have commenced investigations to take the escaped prisoners into custody.
Meanwhile, Army Spokesperson Brig. Ruwan Wanigasuriya stated that the situation at the Welikada prison is now fully under control.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Prison Reforms and Rehabilitation process has stated that following the clash that occurred in the prison, prisoners had entered the weapon storage facility and taken 78 weapons into their possession.
Minister of the Division, Chandrasiri Gajadeera added that out of those, six have been taken into the custody by the prison officials.
Police Headquarters meanwhile stated that a special investigation has been launched into the incident.
Police Media Spokesperson SSP Prishantha Jayakody stated that the investigation was being carried out with the assistance of the CID.
