The Elpitiya regional coordinating committee meeting today (15) was in uproar after southern provincial councillor Ajith Prasanna objected to the presence of Bentara-Elpitiya SLFP organizer Geetha Kumarasinghe there.
The two exchanged words, and minister Gunaratne Weerakoon too involved in a verbal exchange with Kumarasinghe.
The minister, who was in the chair, put off the meeting, also attended by public officials.
Later, councilor Prasanna, joined by
Pradeshiya Sabha members Sarath Alwis, A.G. Sagara Thilakasiri, Nalin
Priyadarshana and K.D.D. Sumitha, started a protest at Elpitiya town
against the SLFP organizer.
Minister Weerakoon, who visited them,
requested the protestors to suspend their action until the president is
informed about the matter.
When contacted, Kumarasinghe claimed the
five LG members were attempting to prevent her from contesting the
provincial council polls, as they feared defeat for themselves.
