Man marries mother and daughter
A 29 year old man from Deraniyagala, who has married a widow and her 20 year old daughter, was arrested by the Avissawella Police and will be produced before the Magistrate on 19 February.
The suspect, who had been employed as a driver at a livestock farm in Kosgama, married a 44 year old widow, also employed at the same farm, six years ago and was living with her and her daughter in her house in Eswatta.
However, later he had moved out of the farm and visited his wife’s Eswatta residence only occasionally. In the meantime, the young daughter of the widow, who attended tuition classes, had not returned home one day, and the mother had lodged a complaint with the Avissawella Police about the disappearance.
However, the daughter had later contacted the mother, and informed that she was living with the husband of her mother. The trio was summoned to the police and the young daughter had turned up, armed with her marriage certificate, which stated that she and her mother’s second husband were lawfully married on 13 December, last year.
The bewildered mother, who could not produce her marriage certificate, complained to the police that it was missing from her house. However, the mystery was resolved, only when the daughter revealed that she took away the marriage certificate of the mother, in order to destroy the evidence of her husband’s first marriage. The mother, coaxed by the police, agreed to shelter the daughter at her residence, while the police were taking action against the man for bigamy. The suspect will be produced before Court on 19 February.
