Panora and Luminous Fraud ?

 

The Central Bank has warned the public regarding a fraudulent activity which is being conducted by advertising that people can gain large benefits by paying to watch the advertisements found in the internet.

The Central Bank has commenced investigations regarding to companies involved in the particular scam.

Luminous Advertising Pvt Limited located in No 28, Palliyawatta Road, Tissamaharama and Panora Advertising Pvt Limited located in ' New Thushara Motors', Tissa Road, Walawa Amabalangoda have thus been subjected to investigations.

The Central Bank has previously requested the two companies to provide information on the form and the legality of them, reports say.

In addition, the Central Bank has taken measures to advertise and inform the public regarding the situation.

Murder Of Kelaniya PS Member Hasitha Madawala

Kelaniya local body member Hasitha Madawala who led a campaign against Minister Mervyn Silva was most brutally killed falling victim to a gunman.

Prasanna Ranaweera, Chairman of the Kelaniya Pradeshiya Sabha (PS) and several others yesterday accused a certain government politician in the area as the person responsible for the killing of the PS member, Hasitha Madawala, on Saturday night.

Ranaweera and the other PS members were at the slain PS member, Madawala’s residence at Kelaniya yesterday, to pay their last respect.

He told  neither Madawala nor he or any other member of the Kelaniya PS had any enemies. “We had only supporters, well wishers and sympathizers.

Even those supporters in the opposition had no cause for anger or enmity with us. They were all friendly with us.
 
But our problems started only in 2012. Although matters came to a head, we did not complain against anybody to anyone,” he said.

He also said, “Madawala and all of us in the PS raised our vices against the corruption and anomalies that were taking place in the Kelaniya area at the behest of a government politician. That politician, who didn’t like this trend, got Madawala remanded on a trumped up charge. He tried to get us all remanded on various flimsy charges he concocted. In addition to Madawala, several of my colleagues in the PS, were remanded from time to time at the investigation of this person,” he alleged.

 “But in the name of justice and fair play in the Kelaniya area, we would keep on our fight against this political thief, ransom collector and mafia don,” he charged.

Ruwanwelle Sobitha Sentenced to 20 Years for Rape

Former monk Ruwanwelle Sobitha alias S. Shantha has been sentenced to 20 years imprisonment, after he was found guilty of having raped a 28 year old woman in Kegalle.

The Ruwanwella Magistrate sentenced two of his accomplices, who were also found guilty of the charges, to 20 years imprisonment.

The convicts were each fined Rs.20,000 and ordered to pay Rs.200,000 as compensation to the victim. Court directed that in the event they failed to pay the fine, their jail term would be extended by another 18 months while the jail term would be extended by a further two years in case they failed to pay the compensation.

Health Strike and The Rights of People

Eleven trade unions of the minor staff of Sri Lanka Health Department have organized as the Joint Trade Union Committee and decided to stage a strik.

The minor employees of all hospitals island wide will participate in the strike except the employees of Lady Ridgeway Children Hospital, De Soysa and Castle Street Maternity Hospitals and Cancer Hospital where they were to continue normal services due to humanitarian concerns, the trade union say.

The minor employees of the hospitals demand an increase in uniform allowance, a five-day work week, and payments for work on holidays among others.

Youth falls from footboard of train : Balumgala

An individual died after falling off a train in the Veyangoda area Saturday.

According to the Railway Control Room, the victim had been traveling on the foot board of the train which was plying from Colombo to Vavuniya.

The accident had taken place at around 3 p.m. The victim has been identified as a 24 year old resident of the Eluwa area in Veyangoda.


Railways General Manager B A P Ariyaratne has said that a three member team has been appointed to inquire into the incident.

He was speaking at a press conference held at the Railway Headquarters yesterday.

He also stated that the report of the inquiring board is expected to be submitted within two weeks.

Bogus Doctorates and Professors

Balumgala Team busted a multi-million rupee scam involving the sale of doctorates by a group of monks and a layman at a Temple in Kandy earlier this week. The head of this scam is idetified as S.AKariyawasam has been doing this for sometime.

Neth team has used a Balumgala team member to do the business with his. So when the day was set the correspondent drove to Kandy where he was directed to a studio. There he was handed over the cloak and other garments that are worn before receiving a doctorate. Later he was photographed.

Thereafter the journalist was taken to another location in the Kandy town where he met a layman identified as S. A. Kariyawasam who directed him to keep the cash in six separate envelopes to be given to the Buddhist Monks.

Later he was taken to a Buddhist Temple in Mahaiyawa. There he met the chief incumbent who identified himself as Ven. Indrajothi Wansanlankara Maldeniya Vajirana who later handed over the certificate.

This came despite an assurance by the Higher Education Ministry that it was preparing a policy framework that would prevent bogus education institutions from granting qualifications.

The Ministry also banned 10 such education institutions from giving bogus doctorates and degrees. The decision to ban the institutions was taken following recommendations by a Cabinet sub-committee appointed to look into the matter.
