Grade 5 Scholarship Exam Results Released

Grade Five scholarship winners

Three students scored 196 marks and become island first in the Grade Five Scholarship examination conducted in August, 2015, the Department of Examinations said.

These students are; W.I.S. Kavinda Unanthenna of Gampola Gangasiripura Vidyalaya, R.W.M. Kavishka Wanigasekera of Malmaduwa Makura Primary Collage, Kegalle and G.B.L. Melani Wijesinghe of Ussapitiya Sri Sumangala Primary College, Mawanella.

Five students have been ranked number two with 195 marks. E.M. Oshan Hashinika Gayashani of Dhammananda Maha Vidyalaya. Udubaddawa, G.K. Tharindya Kawri Perera of Veyangoda Hiripitiya Primary College, N. Nehara Madusanka of President's College, Kelaniya, P.M Wishwa Pathiraja of Homagama Pahathgama Romanu Katholika Vidyalaya Hanwella and W. V. Dulaj Nethul Wijesekera of Udupila Primary College Delgoda.

Three students have obtained the third place with 194 marks. They are; K.A. Savindu Aman of Siridhamma College, Akmeemana, A.J. Gamidu Sasmitha of Galle Kularathna Maha Vidyalaya, Ambalangoda and A.P.C Sanjan Abeydeera of Tangalle Primary College, Tangalle.

Janaka Bandara remanded

UPFA MP Janaka Bandara Thennakoon, who was arrested yesterday in connection with a murder in 1999, was remanded till October 20 by the Colombo Chief Magistrate today.

The Magistrate visited the hospital where Tenakoon was undergoing retreatment, to inspect his condition prior to ordering him to be remanded. Tennakoon was arrested by the CID while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Colombo.

Duty increase on Japanese cars – Aqua up by 7 lakhs, Prius by 11.20 lakhs

Through the Gazette notification No. 1933/16 pertaining to imposing Customs duties, the government has announced new Customs duties on Japanese motor vehicles like Toyota and others imported to Sri Lanka.
Accordingly, the Customs duty on a Toyota Aqua vehicle has been increased by Rs. 770,000while the duty on a Toyota Axio vehicle has been increased by Rs. 703,000. Furthermore, the Customs duty on a Toyota Hiace Petrol vehicle has been increased by Rs. 1,365,000 and a Toyota Hiace Diesel vehicle by Rs. 1,700,000. Similarly, the Customs duties on Toyota Premio/Allion vehicles have been increased by Rs. 675,000 and Toyota Prius motorcars by Rs. 1,120,000. Also, the Customs duty on a Toyota Harrier has been upped by Rs. 1,150,000 while on a Mitsubishi Outlander the duty has gone up by Rs. 852,000.

Commenting on this, Sri Lanka Motor Vehicle Importers’ Association president Indika Sampath Merinchige said that the prices of these vehicles would increase in accordance with these Customs duty increases.
He also added that due to the duty increase on Japanese vehicles, the prices of Indian manufactured vehicles too would increase.

Suren Ratwatte appointed SriLankan Airlines CEO

SriLankan Airlines today announced the appointment of Captain Suren Ratwatte as the Airline’s new Chief Executive Officer with effect from October 2015.

Capt. Ratwatte is an Airline Pilot with over 30 years of experience in the field whose first appointment was with SriLankan’s predecessor, Air Lanka in 1984. Thereafter, he joined Emirates in 1989, where he held several positions in the Company. With over 18,000 flying hours in a number of different types of aircraft, including the Boeing B-777 and Airbus A380, he has been deeply immersed in airline operations for many years.

Captain Ratwatte is a holder of Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society and the author of several published works.
He is also a well-known Human Factors researcher and practitioner, having published a number of articles and essays in the field. His expertise includes a variety of senior instructional and management roles in Airlines, most recently was the Human Factors Manager of Emirates Airlines.

Lankans advised to refrain from visiting Lumbini

The Sri Lankan Embassy in Nepal has requested Lankans planning to visit Lumbini to refrain from doing so until further notice.

The advisory has been issued on the basis of the unrest in the area resulting from a series of protests by Indians. Every year thousands of Buddhist pilgrims visit Lumbini – the Buddha’s birth place. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said some 300 Sri Lankan pilgrims who were stranded in Lumbini, have managed leave the area safely and are currently on their way back to Sri Lanka.

The Sri Lankan Embassy requests the following number to be contacted (+97714720213) to obtain information on the travel advisory to Lumbini or reach Lankans who might be travelling to the area.

Five PSD officers killed in accident - CCT Video

Five presidential Security Division (PSD) officers were killed and several others injured when a defender vehicle and two private buses crashed into each other at Miriswatte on the Minuwangoda-Colombo Road this morning.

Three males and one female were among the dead, police said. The injured were admitted to the Minuwangoda Hospital and later transferred to the Gampaha Hospital. Another injured PSD officer who was receiving treatment at the Gampaha Hospital had been succumbed to his injuries a few hours later, police said.

Aksha Sudari has lashed out at another model

Popular actress and model Aksha Sudari has lashed out at another model - Shashi Hewage, sources from the Mirihana police say (09).

Aksha, who had driven out with Swarnawahini show host - Piyumi Hansamali, had used her car to obstruct Shashi's car before assaulting Shashi, reports add.

Earlier, Aksha and her mother had assaulted another woman at a salon.
