Facebook relationship end up in court

A youth who was arrested and produced in court on charges of having blackmailed a lady teacher into sex by threatening to post her nude photos on Facebook was released on bail by a Colombo Court today.

The suspect who was working at a private media institution was arrested by the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) and produced before Colombo Fort Magistrate Ms. Lanka Jayaratne.

The lady teacher in a complaint to the CCD said she was blackmailed into sex by the suspect who befriended her on Facebook, by threatening to post her nude photos on it.

Appearing on behalf of the suspect, defence counsel Kingsley Hettiarachchi submitted in court that his client had never blackmailed the complainant and told court that they were having an affair. Mr. Hettiarachchi further informed court that his client had taken her nude photos with her consent. He further told court that the complainant had made this complaint after they broke off the love affair and maintained that his client had also given her a sum of Rs.20,000.

The complainant a resident of Agalawatta, told the CCD that she had built a friendship with a man working in a private media institution via Facebook on September 15 and in time their friendship had turned into a love affair and they contacted each other regularly by mobile phone.

The woman said she had met the suspect at a hotel in Bambalapitiya on September 17 and on that occasion he had coaxed her to be photographed in the nude. She said she allowed him to take her photos on the promise he would marry her.

The woman said she had given the man Rs.7,000 on one occasion and on another Rs.4,000 and alleged that she was being continuously blackmailed by the man thereafter.

The CCD detectives who are conducting the investigation into the incident informed the Colombo Fort Magistrate that the suspect could be charged with coercing the complainant into sex by threatening to post her nude photos on Facebook. 

Having considered the submissions, the Magistrate ordered that the suspect be released on a cash bail of Rs.7,500 and a surety of Rs.50,000.

Trading at CSE halted for 30 minitues

 An error trade in Distilleries Company of Sri Lanka shares triggered a 30 minitue market halt on the Colombo stock exchange Friday morning, the bourse said in statement.

The market halt was imposed at 11.00 a.m. after the bourse's Milanka price index dropped over 5% from the previous market day's close. 

The stock exchange said the MPI had dropped by over five percent owing to an error trade relating to 1,200 shares of Distilleries Company at 100 rupees a share.

The closing price of Distilleries Thursday was 149.60 rupees.

The CSE said broker firm responsible for the error trade had notified the bourse of the error and that it will be conducting an inquiry into it.

Stocks recovered after the trading resumed but were still weaker in afternoon trade. Colombo stocks had fallen 2.7 percent on Thursday. 

"A market halt is used internationally by stock exchanges as a procedure for volatility management," the CSE statement said.

"Under such procedures trading may be halted temporarily or under extreme circumstances, a market may be closed prior to normal close of the trading session."

Baby Farm raided in Moratuwa

The CID is supporting an investigation into a children’s home at Rawatawatte in Moratuwa, where a child farm racket had taken place.


Chairperson of the National Child Protection Authority Anoma Dissanayake said the IGP has promised his support for the probe.
The children's home is presently under the custody of the NCPA, which was exposed following a call to the 1929 hotline.

The NCPA raided the place Nov. 23 and took around 70 children, including several infants, 15 mothers and six pregnant women, into its care.
A middleman, an American couple, a German couple as well as two Sri Lankan women had been there at the time.

Foreigners had paid more than Rs. 700,000 to buy a child from the children's home, which had given Rs. 35,000 to the mother.

Among the suspects arrested is a sister, who will be produced before courts today.

Police seek CERT, SLIIT help on porn websites

Police have sought the assistance of the Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) and the Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT) to obtain details of people who operate pornographic websites, which allegedly feature local men and women, the Children and Women’s Bureau told Court yesterday.

In a report on pornographic websites, police said the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) had informed them that though it had banned a number of such pornographic websites, the TRC was unable to provide details of people who operated them as did so from overseas.

The Children and Women’s Bureau said due to that reason they had sought the assistance of the CERT and the SLIIT to probe pornographic operators.  
Colombo Fort Magistrate ordered the police to file an investigation report regarding the matter on February 23 next year. 

The Children and Women’s Bureau said pornographic material found on the web could easily induce children, young people and adults to sexual crimes. The Bureau told court that it was carrying out investigations and would take legal action against anyone found guilty under the provisions of the Obscene Publications Act No 22 of 1983.

Anuruddha Ratwatta passed away

Former Minister of Power and Energy and Deputy Minister of Defence, General Anuruddha Ratwatte passed away yesterday at a hospital in his home town of Kandy. He was 73 at the time of his death.

He was admitted to the Kandy hospital recently and was being treated at the Neurosurgical Unit at the time of his death.

He entered politics as a member of the Kandy Municipal Council and entered Parliament in 1989 for the first time, through the national list of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party.

He was re-elected to Parliament in 1994 and 2000 from the Kandy district as a member of the UPFA. At the time of his demise, Ratwatte was the national organizer and Pathadumbra electorate organizer of the SLFP.

Before entering politics he also served as an officer of the Sri Lanka Army.

He has three sons Lohan Ratwatte MP, Kandy Mayor Mahen Ratwatte and Chanuka Ratwatte.

His remains lie at the Ratwatte ancestral home in Mahaiyawa, Katugastota. The funeral will be held, Sunday at the family burial grounds at Niththawela.

“Thaksalawa” teledrama which were telecast on Swarnawahini channel won the best teledrama award. Its director Ananda Abenayaka won the best teledrama director 2011 award. Musician and Singer Samantha Perera won the best theme song singer and best musician awards for his singing and music direction in “Thaksalawa” teledrama.

Best screen play award went to “Abarthu Atha” teledrama writer Rasika Suriyaarachchi and he also won the best theme song writer award for the same teledrama.

Dulani Anuradha won the best upcoming teledrama actress award and Jagath Manuwarna was awarded with best upcoming actor award for his role in “Thaksalawa” teledrama.
Senior actor Anula Karunathilaka and Singer Angelin Gunathilaka were awarded with U.W.Sumathipala memorial award.
