Electricity rates to go up ??

Senior minister Dr. Sarath Amunugama says electricity rates will have to go up following the increase in fuel prices.

Speaking at a public rally in Kandy, he said the country has no option but to use fuel and electricity sparingly.

Deputy minister Premalal Jayasekara said the decision on increasing electricity rates would be taken by the Public Utilities Commission.

With the increase in the fuel prices, production at diesel-powered plants has become costlier, he said.
The deputy minister added that the electricity rates could be reduced once the fuel prices are decreased.
